Day of the Dead  (El Dia de los Muertos)

Calacas and Voodoo Dolls

Inspired by the whimsy of death that this art form portrays, these Mystic Voodoo Day of the Dead dolls are created in a fashion unique to the artist. Combining the the traditional styles of New Orleans Voodoo folk art and contemporary Mesoamerican decorative design, these Day of the Dead dolls are carefully constructed out of a base of sticks and Spanish moss, and adorned with beautiful fabrics, vintage lace, fancy yarns, feathers, and special iconic charms, flowers, fetishes, and beads unique to el Día de los Muertos. Their faces are individually hand sculpted and carved out of clay, styrofoam, or altered plastic skulls with painted details. Truly One of a Kind (OOAK), these uniquely crafted Day of the Dead dolls have become highly collectible.

Day of the Dead

Catrina with Mariposa
Price $59.95

This Day of the Dead Voodoo doll calavera is made in honor of Catrina, made popular by renowned author, journalist and political cartoonist Guadalupe Posada, (1852-1913). He is credited for popularizing the Day of the Dead celebrations, especially through the creation of skeletal cartoons that capture the Mexican attitude towards death. The name Catrina means "dapper," and she reflects the fashions of the times. I have recreated this fashionable diva as a Day of the Dead doll calavera that exudes comedic elegance.
